Maths Week 2024 – Card Gaming
Maths Week 2024 takes place from 12-20th October and we are inviting primary school classes to come in for an hour of fun maths!
This year we are taking inspiration from an amazing find in one of our books. In the image here on the left, you can see a sheet of pasted down paper with playing cards on, two of which are the heads of two brightly painted knaves. These cards ended up in the scrap pile never to be played, however, back in the day, paper was never thrown away but recycled and re-used to strengthen and support the bindings and textblock of many books.
So many games in cards involve using maths and mental maths without us even knowing we’re doing it!
The children will play a few warm up whole class games with probability and place value and then we will learn a few games of patience which involve learning number bonds of 2 digit numbers. Hopefully the children can play these in the classroom and at home.
