Seeking an Assistant Librarian
We are seeking to recruit an Assistant Librarian for Marsh’s Library in central Dublin.
Location: St. Patrick’s Close, Dublin 8
Reporting to: Assistant Director, Marsh’s Library
Salary: €40,000 – €45,000.
Duration: One year, with a possibility of renewal for a further two years.
The Role
Marsh’s Library, founded in 1707, has significant collections of early modern books and manuscripts. We are seeking a highly organised and self-motivated Assistant Librarian to join the dedicated team of library and conservation specialists that manages the library collections. This is an ideal position for an early-career librarian.
Job Specifications
• Reading Room & Reference: Supervising the reading room and providing reference services to researchers.
• Fellowships & Interns: Assisting with the administration of Library Fellowships and the supervision and training of reading room interns.
• Outreach & Education: Contributing to the Library’s outreach programme, including classes for third-level students, installing exhibitions, and managing social media content. Involvement with digital humanities projects and digitisation workflows.
• Systems Management: Assisting with the maintenance and development of the Koha Library Management System.
• Collection Management: Contributing to general collection care, including acquisitions, cataloguing to international standards, identifying items for conservation in our purpose-built bindery, and performing stock checks.
• Other duties as may be assigned from time to time by the Assistant Director.
Essential Requirements
• Experience: At least one year of post qualification experience in a library.
• Education: Fluency in English. A good undergraduate degree and a postgraduate qualification in Librarianship, Information Studies, or equivalent.
• Technical Expertise: Proven experience with Library Management Systems and cataloguing to international standards (MARC21).
• Teamwork: A demonstrated ability to work effectively within a small, collaborative team.
• Soft Skills: An ability to communicate with readers, academics, students, and other library professionals. Self-motivated with excellent time management skills, the ability to meet deadlines, and strong analytical skills with meticulous attention to detail.
Desirable Qualifications
• Experience working with special collections, or demonstrable interest in same.
• Proficiency in at least one modern European language.
• Experience with digital humanities projects and digitisation workflows.
